THE CORK TREE
The bark of the cork oak tree; a long lasting tree, predominantly found in Portugal, but also in Spain, Southern France, Italy and North Africa. Once the tree matures to 25, it is ready to be harvested for the first time. The first two, the Virgin cork and Secunderia cork, aren’t good enough quality to be used in high quality merchandise so these are shredded and used for other bi products such as cork sheeting, pin board etc.

CORK FABRIC
The harvested bark is boiled in water, which expands the cork cells making them easier to manipulate. No chemicals such as formaldehydes are used in this process. Thin sheets are shaved out of the bark; the same size as tissue paper. In order for the sheets to become durable, it is backed with cotton lining. This is when design flair is implemented (colours, patterns etc.), as it is the only point it can happen.
